François Coillard (1834-1904) was one of the few Frenchmen to follow in Livingstone's footsteps in southern Africa, the "preserve of the English and Portuguese" at the end of the 19th century. He was sent to Lesotho, where he founded the Leribé mission, and spread his influence tirelessly to Natal, Orange and the Transvaal. In 1877-1878, accompanied by his wife and a group of confreres, he undertook a long journey north, with the aim of converting the Banyai, a people particularly hostile to whites, discovered by Livingston south of the Zambezi.
