Lot no. 209
COLAS (Jean-François). Le Manuel du cultivateur dans le vignoble d'Orléans, utile à tous les autres vignobles du royaume. Orléans, Charles Jacob, 1770. In-8 marbled fawn calf, spine decorated, triple gilt fillet and gilt corner finials on covers, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this excellent monograph on the Orléans vineyards.
In this treatise, Jean-François Colas (1702-1772), known as Colas de Guyenne, provost and canon of the royal church of Saint-Aignan in Orléans, aimed to update Jacques Boullay's 1712 reference work on the subject, la Manière de bien cultiver la vigne dans le vignoble d'Orléans, by providing a more precise, clearer and less polemical manual than his predecessor.
It covers every stage of wine production, from planting to harvesting, and then explains "how to make wine, manage it and sell it with advantage".
Corners bumped, head cover worn.
Herluison, n°431 - Chwartz, I, n°313 - Simon, Gastronomica, 361.
