Rare first edition of this superb album celebrating Josephine Baker and the Revue nègre. The illustration comprises 21 leaves (of 22), for 41 (of 42) original lithographs superbly stencilled by Jean Saudé (including one on the verso of the title, and one on a double page), a calligram in the shape of a head on a white background, and a calligram in the shape of a tree on a grey background. The album also contains 6 leaves, one of which is a double page for the justification and in fine the mention of the printers; the false title; the title; the introduction by Rip; the facsimile of a text by Joséphine Baker on fine paper. First album by Paul Colin (1892-1985), considered to be his masterpiece. The Revue nègre troupe arrived from Broadway with 12 musicians and 13 dancers, including its rising star, the young Joséphine Baker, to perform at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris in 1925. Edition of 520 copies, one of 500 on tinted vellum paper. Missing 1 f. illustrated with one of the 2 lithographs of the musicians in white on a black background. Red cover with flaps very damaged, torn and missing, glued to the second flap of the cover. Printed cover with title: tears and missing parts, tape restoration, stains, and on the first counter-ply and second cover, pencil sketch.
