COLLECTION OF MESOPOTAMIAN STONE DUCK-SHAPED WEIGHTS.
Ca. 2000 - 1500 BC
A collection of seven stone duck-shaped weights, each with a compact lentoid body and short projecting head at one end, the underside flat. The group is cut from a range of hardstones, including translucent chalcedony, clear rock crystal, reddish carnelian and a dark stone. Most are pierced at the neck or shoulder for suspension and engraved on the flat face with simple linear signs.

Provenance: Private London collection of an Ancient Art dealer; Formerly in a central London family collections 1990s; Suggested to be examined by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert FBA (1926-2011), historian, archaeologist, and specialist in Assyriology and Near Eastern archaeology, in the late 1980s and early 1990s.; ex. 1970s/early80s UK art market.
