COLLECTION OF ROMAN TERRACOTTA OIL LAMPS.

A collection of three mould-made terracotta oil lamps, including, from left to right: a lamp with rounded body, rear handle and short nozzle, the circular discus framed by double grooves and decorated with Cupid walking left on a wavy groundline, with Hercules’ club slung across his back; a lamp with broad shoulder and voluted nozzle, the recessed field showing a kneeling figure to right holding a basin beneath the head of a goat; and a pale orange lamp with narrow shoulder and pointed nozzle, the discus bordered by a wreath and moulded with the bust of Serapis wearing a modius, flanked by a crescent moon and star.

Provenance: From a British collection formed in the 1990s; previously acquired in Germany.
