Lot no. 110
Colonial School. 17th - 18th century.
"Christ, fountain of blood".
Oil on canvas. 45 x 35 cm.
The iconography of Christ as a fountain of life has its origin in the engraving "Christus als Quell des Lebens" by Peter Overadt Erben (1595-1655), published by G. C. Stich in the 17th century. (Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig. (2021-11-02). Christus als Quell des Lebens. Retrieved from https://global.museum-digital.org/object/1537349)

Similar examples to our painting are the Christ as the fountain of life, by an anonymous artist, kept in the Museo Nacional de Arqueología, Antropología, e Historia in Lima, and that of the Cuzcan artist which is part of the Barbosa-Stern Collection in Lima, both dating from the 17th century.
