Lot no. 43
Colonial School. 18th century. 'Pair of Lamp-Bearing Angels' Wonderful pair of carved, polychromed and gilded wooden sculptures, with silver leaf. Measurements: 84 x 56 x 35 cm and 83 x 58 x 19 cm. They wear attire similar to that of the Archangel Saint Michael, with a Roman soldier's cuirass, but in this case, with a leafy skirt, as is customary in Andean art. The ornamentation of the polychrome is magnificent. The cuirass covered in sgraffitied silver and the skirt with delicate brush-painted flowers. The flesh tones on the faces are also beautiful. The sense of movement that the sculptor imparts to the figures, with the skirt billowing in the wind, forming multiple folds is also remarkable.
