Lot no. 37
Colonial School. Anonymous New Spanish. Late 16th - early 17th century. 'The Madonna with the Child Crowned by Two Angels and the Infant Saint John' Oil on copper. Accompanied by an imposing Italian ebonised wooden frame with gilded bronze applications from the late 17th century. Mary, crowned as Queen and Lady of the angels, holds her Son in her arms while receiving the Precursor who offers her a basket of fruit, with a phylactery that reads 'Ecce Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi' (Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world). Executed with great finesse, the group's colonial faces are imbued with great tenderness, but the painting also shows clear compositional influence from Italy. In our opinion, this painting is by the same master as another painting on copper that we sold in auction 84, lot number 75. Copper measurements: 21.5 x 16 cm. Frame measurements: 33 x 27 cm.
