Due to the similarities between our work and engravings by Luis de Morales and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, it seems likely that the painter was inspired by them to create this Ecce Homo. Likewise, we find it reminiscent of work by Melchor Pérez Holguín, although in the event that it was painted by Holguin himself or an artist in his circle, they would have also been influenced by the aforementioned engravings. The inspiration from Spanish artists of a more classical nature is mixed with autochthonous influences that can be seen in the type of halo, in some features (especially eyes and eyebrows), in the more explicitly dramatic drops of blood and in the darker-skinned complexion.
