In-8, stiff vellum with covers, skin binding (contemporary binding). The most complete Elzevier edition of this polyglot manual published by the Moravian pedagogue Jan Amos Komenský, known as Comenius (1592-1670), whose aim was to improve the method of teaching languages by having them learnt in phrases rather than isolated words. This third edition published by Nathanaël Düez includes five languages: Latin, French, Italian, Spanish and German. A fine copy in contemporary vellum. Handwritten note signed Colerus on verso of title: Achetté à Paris le 25 février 1740 and handwritten table of titles on the first endpaper. Willems, n°1270.
