Lot no. 65
Mazarine chest of drawers opening to three rows of drawers with "cabochon" fronts. The top is richly decorated with compartments, drawers and sides inlaid with flowering vases, foliage, birds, insects, grotesque masks and foliage in fruitwood and pewter on a black background. Panelled console jambs. Louis XIV period, circa 1705-1710 H. 83 cm - W. 129 cm - D. 68 cm JB Damage, missing parts, major restorations and redone parts. This type of marquetry, inspired by the paintings of Monnoyer, was very popular both in Paris (André-Charles Boulle, Nicolas and Renaud Gaudron, Pierre Gole) and in the provinces (Thomas Hache) around 1700. The production of various pieces of furniture using this type of decoration was considerable over a fairly short period. The description is often the same: a "vaze of flowers" placed on a "campane" with "a grotesque mask underneath". For a very similar chest of drawers with the same gilded nail decoration: -Sale, Paris, Europ Action, 2 October 2013, no. 72
