COMPOSERS. -
Set of 12 autograph pieces.
- SAINT-SAËNS (Camille). LAS, to a "dear friend", dated Luxor, 10 Dec. 1909, 3 pp. in-8, on headed paper of the Hotel Savoy in Luxor. With 3 small sketches of hieroglyphs. On the subject of elections to the Académie (he himself had been elected President of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1901). "As far as the Académie is concerned, I think the situation would be good if Lucien wanted to stir things up a bit. Bellaigue no longer wants to run. Comte passed. We don't want Marcel, who we find ill-bred. Carré does not have sufficient titles, as far as I can see, and Mounet-Sully is hardly serious (...)".
- SAINT-SAËNS (Camille). LAS, 30 August (1877), 2 pp. in-8 and a half, to an artist with whom he wishes to be reconciled: "Dear Madame, Fauré is still a little young, and really I would be tempted to think you as young as he is, having the insistence you put on revisiting this old story (...). You have always been and always will be for me an incomparably great artist, the influence you have had on my talent has been enormous (...). You were the first Dalila and you yourself will not be able to make me forget that (...).
- HAHN (Reynaldo). LAS, dated Paris, 1929, 1 p. in-12, to the Baroness of Gaeta, whom he will be happy to see again in Paris.
- INDY (Vincent d'). LAS, dated Paris 20 May 1899, 3 pp. in-12, to Willy: "You know (do you?) that I can only really work in the dough, poem and music mixed, this one modifying that one comma and that one, this one, so that when this thing comes out of its mould, there is nothing left of the raw material. "
- PUCCINI (Giacomo). A. s. card, illustrated, in Italian, stamped "Torino, 12 Nov. 1911", to his publisher Tito Ricordi: "We've got it! Clausetti shines in his greatness! Carlo Clausetti succeeded Ricordi after Tito's retirement.
- PUCCINI (Giacomo). A. s. card, in Italian, (Las Palmas, 17 June 1905), to his publisher Giulio Ricordi. Affectionate message from Las Palmas; he had a good journey, his wife Elvira suffered from the roll. Puccini was making his first crossing of the Atlantic to Buenos Aires, where five of his operas were being performed.
- PONCHIELLI (Amilcare). LAS, Milan, 7 December 1885, 4 pp. in-8, with his cipher printed. Beautiful letter to his friend, the librettist Antonio Ghislanzoni: he encourages him to write a libretto based on Les Jacobites which so impressed him... He goes to Bergamo, then returns for the performance of his Cantate à Grégoire VII... He tells of a concert and the finale of Wagner's Parsifal, splendid...
- CHAUSSON (Ernest). Undated LAS, to his "dear friend". 2 pp. in-12. He thanks for an invitation and gives an appointment for the "2nd act of Siegfried and Hugues et ses croque-morts." Stains and scotch tape.
- FAURÉ (Gabriel). LAS, dated 24 December 1923, to his "dear Angèle", 1 p. in-8 and a half. His health is deteriorating: "My eyesight is getting much weaker; writing on the lines of music paper is treacherous in the long run, and my poor ears no longer allow me to follow conversations".
- ENESCO (Georges), (1881-1955) violinist, composer, conductor. LAS to the composer Fernand Halphen. Around 1908. 2 pp. in-8, with pencil, approx.
Early letter on the subject of his "Poème roumain" (symphonic suite inspired by a national melody), which "will be performed tomorrow. You have, moreover, seen it posted. I hope you will be able to attend, it would give me great pleasure to have your opinion on it'.
- GOUNOD (Charles). LAS, dated 20 August 1864, 2 opp. in-8, to E. Legouvé: "I think that with these four good days of close collaboration, we will have enough to agree definitively on the nature and distribution of the role you are entrusting to me in your work. "He will indicate to him the orchestral chords, the modifications ... "to be undergone in order to arrive at a clearer and fuller musical form...".
- GOUNOD (Charles). LAS, dated Saint-Cloud 29 June 1875, 2 pp. in-8 and a half, to the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, letter of recommendation.
