Lot no. 82
Concrete Art Josef (Bottrop 1888 - 1976 New Haven) Albers GB 1. colour silkscreen on lightly textured watercolour card. 1969. 35 x 35 cm (54.4 x 54.5 cm). With the artist's signature "A", dated and titled. - Minimally brownstained in the outermost sheet edges. Very good overall. Splendid impression in luminous colours with full margins. Very rare print from the series Hommage to the Square. Danilowitz 187 - One of 125 copies. - Albers aims at the relativity of colour: A colour never appears alone, but is influenced in its composition by other colours. In his works, such as GB1, Albers often applies radiant outer squares over darker inner colours - or vice versa. This leads to subtle effects: The same colour can appear warmer or colder, lighter or darker - depending on the surrounding hue. The composition forces the viewer to actively see and question their own perception of colour. GB1 was realised as a screen print - a medium that Albers preferred to use in order to ensure the purity and precision of his colour surfaces. The work is based on the typical scheme of the series: precisely nested squares are arranged in the centre of a square picture surface. Printed by Sirocco Screenprints, New Haven, published by Ives-Sillman, Inc., New Haven 1970. Very rare print from the series Hommage to the Square. Colour serigraph on lightly textured watercolour cardboard. One of 125 copies. - Minimal brown spotting in the outermost sheet edges. Overall very good.
