CONGO (DRC), BELGIAN CONGO
Photographic album of the Belgian Congo, Prince Albert of Belgium’s journey (?) ‘Boma Photo Club’, official reception in Boma, July 1909, an album of 52 photographs documenting a major official reception in Boma, then the capital of the Belgian Congo: the arrival of a flag-decked liner greeted by the crowd at the jetty; a parade of troops from the Force Publique presenting arms beneath an avenue of coconut palms; a procession of dignitaries in white colonial attire heading towards a wooden church; a visit to a school bearing the inscription ‘...‘the vocational school’”, a brass band and drummers in the procession, the Boma-Plateau railway station and tracks, and a group portrait of local dignitaries. The combination of clues (protocol and decorum, a military parade of honour, a visit to a school) suggests that this event should be linked to the stop in Boma during Prince Albert of Belgium’s journey to the Congo, the final stop on his journey before his return to Antwerp on 27 July 1909—the first trip by a member of the Belgian royal family to the colony. Burgundy canvas binding with the title ‘Photo-Club de Boma’ in gold lettering; two published postcards (Van Cortenbergh, Cosmo-Kin) included as supplements. Some signs of wear; the prints are in good overall condition.
