CONSALVO CARELLI Naples, 1818 - 1910 Capri Signed C Carelli, Capri bottom right Oil on paper applied on board, 24.5X15.5 cm Provenance: Rome, Giosi collection A child of art, Consalvo Carelli was trained in an environment deeply rooted in the Neapolitan landscape tradition. He studied the watercolour technique with the English painter William Leitch, who transmitted to him the luministic sensitivity and chromatic freshness typical of the British school. He made his debut at a very young age, winning a silver medal at the 1830 Exhibition of Fine Arts, testifying to the early recognition of his talent. He then moved to Rome, where he devoted himself to studying the masters of the 16th and 17th centuries, delving into perspective construction and the atmospheric rendering of landscapes. On his return to Naples, he participated in the Bourbon Exhibition, presenting some of the works he had produced during his stay in Rome. The artist is now considered one of the protagonists of the Posillipo School, a movement that renewed Neapolitan landscape painting through direct observation of nature and the vibrant use of light. His works are distinguished by a warm and sunny chromatism, capable of rendering scenes of daily life and seascapes of the Campania coast with poetic immediacy, as in this evocative Veduta di Capri, in which the artist blends descriptive precision with a lyrical and luminous feeling of the Mediterranean landscape.
