Constantin Hansen: Portrait of Marstrand in full figure. Study. 1837. Unsigned. Oil on paper laid on canvas. 34 x 22 cm.
"Portræt i hel Figur af Marstrand". Portrait of Marstrand in full figure. Study for "Et Selskab af danske Kunstnere i Rom". A group of Danish artists in Rome. 1837. Unsigned. Inscribed on the reverse of the canvas: Portraitstudie af Maleren W. Marstrand. Const. Hansen p. Oil on paper laid on canvas. 34 x 22 cm.
"Et Selskab af danske Kunstnere i Rom" (National Gallery of Denmark) is one of Constantin Hansen's most famous paintings. Centrally placed slightly left of the center stands Marstrand leaning against the balcony's railing while he views the city and smokes a cigar - the epitome of casual elegance. As the only one of the seven portrayed artists (Bindesbøll, Rørbye, Kuchler, Blunck, Constantin Hansen and Jørgen Sonne) Marstrand does not participate in the discussion that takes place amongst the others in the room, he is looking out and away. He is both part of the artist group and strangely detached from it. The painting is emblematic of the Golden Age and the self-image of the Golden Age painters. With the portrayal of the long slender slightly bended figure of Marstrand detached from anything else, this little study captures the whole essence of this new artistic self-awareness and self-esteem.
