Constantin Meunier (1831 Etterbeck - 1905 Ixelles)
Character head
Depiction of a young man with short brown hair, angular facial features and a free upper body, gazing fixedly into the distance. A portrait composed in finely nuanced colouring of the incarnation and effective lighting by this multi-talented artist, who enjoyed great fame primarily as a sculptor. As a painter, Meunier was trained by his brother Jean-Baptiste and François-Joseph Navez and turned to realism under the influence of Charles de Groux. From 1885 at the latest, Meunier gave up painting and from then on focussed entirely on his work as a sculptor. Oil on canvas, relined. Signed lower right; 38.5 cm x 30 cm. Frame.
