A portrait composed in finely nuanced colouring of the incarnation and effective lighting by this multi-talented artist, who enjoyed great fame primarily as a sculptor. As a painter, Meunier was trained by his brother Jean-Baptiste and François-Joseph Navez and turned to realism under the influence of Charles de Groux.
