Using heligravure, Richter succeeded in transforming the photographic model into a composition with a soft, painterly quality. This early work exemplifies Richter's strategy of not depicting photographic reality, but transforming it and using deliberate blurring to create an ambivalent pictorial effect between documentary accuracy and enraptured abstraction.
