Gerhard Richter
Canary Landscapes I. 1971. Heliogravure on wove paper. 15.5 x 23 cm (39.5 x 50 cm). Signed and numbered. - A few isolated, tiny pinpoint stains. Overall very good. Brilliant print with a decidedly soft, textured effect, the colour fresh and intense.
Butin 39a. - One of 100 copies. - Ed. Galerie Heiner Friedrich, Munich 1971 - Based on photographs that Gerhard Richter took in 1969 on the Canary Islands, he developed a six-part edition that was published in 1971 and from which the present sheet originates. Using heligravure, Richter succeeded in transforming the photographic model into a composition with a soft, painterly quality. This early work exemplifies Richter's strategy of not depicting photographic reality, but transforming it and using deliberate blurring to create an ambivalent pictorial effect between documentary accuracy and enraptured abstraction.
