Hans Peter Reuter
Light-Space (447). 1988. Watercolour over pencil on wove paper. 50 x 35 cm. Signed, dated and inscribed with the work number, also with work details on the verso. Mounted on mount backing and framed under glass (unopened). - Slightly yellowed along the upper margin, upper right corner minimally and barely visibly bumped, overall very good. Colours fresh.
Reuter has become widely known for his blue paintings and objects, whose centrally perspective constructed tile grids evoke imaginary colour spaces. Since the 1970s, he has painted almost exclusively in all shades of blue before focussing solely on ultramarine blue. His meticulously calculated, refined trompe l'oeil paintings are explorations of surface and space and are given a visual-sensual dimension by light as an additional element in his work. The light allows the gridded spatial lines to expand without limits and unfolds a captivating, suggestive effect full of surreal spatial fantasy. Reuter's actually massive pictorial spaces are characterised by a strange weightlessness and diaphanous quality.
