Conway (William Martin). Climbing and Exploration in the Karakoram - Himalayas. Londra, Fisher Unwin, 1894. 2 volumes and an atlas in-4°, publisher's full cloth bindings, with title & tomaison labels on the spine, and place and date labels at the foot, medallion with the author's portrait on the first plate of the atlas. First edition, one of 150 deluxe copies numbered and signed by the author (no. 37), with a suite of illustrations on Japan paper pasted on. Without the volume of scientific appendices. Account of the expedition led by Conway in the Karakoram in 1892, with Mc Cormick, Roudebush, O. Eckenstein, M. Zurbriggen and C. G. Bruce. This team explored the Baltoro glacier and climbed Pioneer Peak (6,890 m), an altitude record for the time. A fundamental work on this region. With numerous illustrations in and out of the text by A. D. McCormick. The atlas includes 2 (of 5) fold-out maps: I - The Bagrot, Hunza, Nagyr and the Hispar Glacier. II - The biafo and Baltoro Glacier. A fold-out map of Kashmir is included. Baron William Martin Conway of Allington (1856-1937) was one of the great English explorers of the late 19th century. He took part in major expeditions to the Karakoram, South America and Spitsbergen; it was he who discovered the fabulous Baltoro glacier, where he climbed Pioneer Peak in 1892, setting the altitude record for the time (6,890 m). Together with Coolidge, he wrote numerous mountaineering guides. Alexander Robert Goldie (Boulogne-sur-Mer 1844 - Bath 1923) was an English clergyman and man of letters, author of the classic "The Idealism of Art" (London, 1879).
