Lot no. 61
Pair of monumental trapezoids Italy, late 19th - early 20th century
In burnished bronze, modelled in the form of winged griffins, with lion's head, spread wings and powerful feral frame. Each element presents two winged griffins facing each other, with lion's head and curved horns, finely incised spread wings, powerful thorax and feral paws with marked claws and curved tail integrated into the body. Between the figures is a rich relief decoration with a large central shell and stylised leaf motifs, a clear reference to the Renaissance and Mannerist lexicon. The upper part is moulded, wide and flat. The trapezophore model derives from Roman antiquity, where tabletop supports were frequently adorned with mythological animals. During the nineteenth century, the archaeological revival and neo-Renaissance taste revived these typologies in a monumental key.
