Lot no. 226
PAIR OF CARVED MAHOGANY ARMCHAIRS, FRANCE, 19TH CENTURY Empire style and implant, front uprights in the form of a winged monopod lion, open backs with allegorical representations, one possibly of summer and the other musical, removable seats upholstered in green fabric with classical decoration with a garland centred by a bee; wear and tear, minor chipping, missing parts, scratches, flaws, yellowing in the paintwork Cm 98X68X60 A PAIR OF SCULPTED MAHOGANY ARMCHAIRS, FRANCE, 19TH CENTURY; WEAR, MINOR CHIPS, LOSSES, SCRATCHES, DEFECTS, YELLOWINGS (2) The model of these mighty seats can be found in some examples made around the very last years of the 18th century in the consular era and the first decade of the French Empire. And let us speak even more stridently of the front pillars, which, in the shape of a winged monopod, are taken almost faithfully from those of an armchair (of 4) by Jacob-Desmalter. The lines of this upholstery, already in 1808 in Joachim Murat's room at the Elysée Palace and today conserved at the Mobilier National in Paris (P. Samoyault, Mobilier Français Consulat et Empire, Paris 2009, p. 60, fig. 88), are perhaps the evolution of a 1795 example for the Malmaison and attributed to Georges Jacob, (op. cit., p. 27, fig. 29), this time with an open back similar to ours.
