Commentary:
Since the 18th century, the Baccarat crystal works have been a credit to France for the mastery of their skills. A little anecdote, recounted by Admiral Philippe de Gaulle in his Memoirs, remains attached to it: while the battle of Alsace was raging, the 2nd armoured division liberated the town of Baccarat on 31 October 1944: "The famous crystal works, which was thus spared, provides a scene worthy of Bridge on the River Kwai. When we turned up to visit the factory, the guard firmly forbade us to enter: "You're going to disrupt the manufacture of a collection of art glass ordered by Marshal Goering," he told us without laughing. In the end, the service went to General Leclerc.
