At the end of the Battle of Normandy, the village was located at the junction between Canadian and Polish troops to the north and American troops to the south, closing the Chambois pocket. The village was liberated on 20 August 1944 by Major David Vivian Currie's troops after fierce fighting. Over the previous two days, the remnants of the German armies had tried to escape through a narrow passage three kilometres wide between Saint-Lambert and Chambois, with only two possible points for crossing the Dives by vehicle: a bridge at Saint-Lambert and the ford at Moissy. During these two days, the crossing came under constant fire from Allied artillery and aircraft, causing many German casualties and leading to the nickname "Corridor of Death", given the number of dead men and horses found on this narrow crossing.
