CORRADO CAGLI (ITALIAN 1910-1976) Abstract, 1947 mixed media on paper 33 x 51 cm (13 x 20 in.) unframed signed and dated lower left "Cagli / 1947"; dedicated lower right "To Stamos, (friendship), Corrado Cagli / Rome 1948" PROVENANCE Gift of the artist to the Abstract-Expressionist artist Theodoros Stamos Thence by descent in the family LOT NOTES Corrado Cagli was an Italian painter renowned for his versatility across various artistic mediums, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, set and costume design, and tapestry. Born in Ancona, Italy, he moved to Rome in 1915, where he pursued classical studies and attended the Accademia di Belle Arti. His early work featured murals, such as the one he painted in Via Sistina in 1927. In the early 1930s, Cagli co-founded the "New Roman School of Painting" (Scuola Romana) alongside artists like Giuseppe Capogrossi and Emanuele Cavalli. This group was instrumental in shaping modern Italian art. During this period, Cagli experimented with various styles, including neo-Cubism and metaphysical art. The rise of Fascism in Italy and the implementation of racial laws in 1938 compelled Cagli, who was of Jewish heritage, to flee to Paris and subsequently to New York. In the United States, he became a citizen and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, participating in significant events such as the Normandy landings and the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. After the war, Cagli returned to Rome in 1948, where he continued his artistic pursuits, delving into abstract and non-figurative techniques. His work during this time reflected a continuous evolution, blending elements of neo-metaphysical and neo-Cubist styles. He received several accolades, including the Guggenheim Fellowship for painting in 1946 and the Marzotto Prize in 1954. Cagli's works are housed in numerous prestigious institutions worldwide, such as the Uffizi Galleries in Florence, which holds his piece "Nadir" (circa 1966).
