CORRESPONDENCE. Set of 3 binders containing approximately 470 letters sent almost daily by Lieutenant-Colonel Hippolyte CORBIERES, then Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st March Regiment of the 2nd Foreign Legion, mainly to his wife between January 1914 and August 1918. From 1914 to the summer of 1916, he served in Morocco and followed the war on the Western Front from afar. He was posted to the 142nd RI in September, which had just suffered heavy losses at Verdun, and took command of it until January 1918. His very dense and comprehensive correspondence makes little or no mention of military events, but gives a good idea of the state of mind of a senior officer. Attached to this correspondence is a study by Marc Bedjaï published in 2005: "24 mois au Maroc occidental avec le lt-colonel Hippolyte Corbière, commandant du régiment de marche du 2e Etranger, juillet 1914-juin 1916 and a history of the 142e RI. BE Hippolyte CORBIERE (1859-1926), a career officer from Carcassonne, served in the Foreign Legion between 1906 and 1916, took part in operations in Morocco, then joined the Western Front in 1916 until the end of the war, commanding the 142nd RI until January 1918.
