COSTELLO (Dudley). Piedmond and Italy from the Alps to the Tiber. London, James S. Virtue, 1861. 2 volumes in-4°, bound in half-cottoned chagrin, gilt fillets on covers, handsome gilt title on first covers, spine with 5 ornamented bands with gilt title and tomaison, gilt edges. Rubbing and wear to corners and hinges (Binding of the period). First edition illustrated with two title vignettes, 131 plates engraved after drawings by Brockedon and Bartlett and 6 folding or double-page maps, 5 in colour. The northern Italian equivalent of Beattie's Picturesque Switzerland, but much rarer. Volume II is complete with its Appendix of 22 plates. Ex-libris Peter Obergfell pasted on the back covers. Dudley Costello (1803 - 1865) was a journalist, a columnist for the Morning Herald and then the Daily News before becoming deputy editor of the Examiner. He was the brother of poet and travel writer Louisa Stuart Costello. A good copy despite scattered foxing in the margins of the plates. ACL p. 77
