Covered TROPHY CUP with handles in English silver 925/1000. on the occasion of the Aeroclub de la Côte d'Azur, international meeting of 1922, won by Sadi Lecointe Nieuport 300 Hispano Suiza. Marked Rolland Garros - Aeroclub de la cote d'Azur. Goldsmith: Mappin & Webb. H 55 - L: 45 cm - Weight: 4882 gr. Provenance: Former collection of Roger Bellon (1905-1974), Château du Jonchet (Romilly-sur-Aigre), then by descent to Miss Anne Le Tertre and the present owner. Sadi Lecointe (1891-1944) was a French aviator who set several world altitude and speed records and was also a member of the French Resistance. From 1919 to 1924, he worked for Nieuport as chief pilot, testing dozens of aircraft of all types. He then embarked on an international career, breaking the world altitude record by soaring to 8,155 metres in a Spad-Herbemont. On 30 October 1923, he reached 11,145 metres. He set seven world altitude records. He also held eight world speed records (from 275 to 375 km/h) and eighteen world championship titles. On 7 February 1920, he became the world record holder for pure speed, with a flight at 275.862 kilometres per hour, a title he held for only 21 days, being quickly dethroned by Casale. On 10 October 1920, he broke the world speed record, flying at 296.69 kilometres an hour in a Nieuport-Delage equipped with a 300 hp Hispano-Suiza engine. On 12 December 1920, he set a new speed record, averaging 313.043 kilometres per hour, a record he raised to 330.275 kilometres per hour on 26 September 1921,5 and to 375.132 kilometres per hour on 15 February 1923 (source wikipedia).
