CHALICE-SHAPED CRATER WITH RED FIGURES
Attributed to the Chequer Painter, Greek art, Magna Graecia, 4th BC
Black-glazed terracotta vase decorated on each side with a scene framed by a frieze of meanders and chequered patterns on the bottom and laurel leaves on the top. On side A, a juvenile Dionysus is depicted seated, his head encircled by a laurel wreath, draped in a himation and holding a thyrse in his left hand. Flanking the god, two fauns are shown standing, naked, with laurel heads, one holding a thyrse, the other a canthara. During restoration, the two fauns had their genitals amputated. On the reverse, on side B, two ephebes stand facing each other, draped in the himation and their hair girded with a headband.
