The iconographic setting, of intense pathos but composed in a cosy and intimate dimension, recalls the devotional taste of Emilia in the early 17th century. The soft rendering of the body, the calibrated light modulation and the sweetness of the putti reveal a language close to Domenico Zampieri known as Domenichino, and more generally to his Bolognese circle.
