CHAMPLEVED ENAMEL ON COPPER, LIMOGES, XIIIth CENTURY
(As is)
A champlevé Limoges enamel Christ on the cross book cover, Limoges, 13th century
HEIGHT. 22 - WIDTH. 12,50 CM - H. 8,7 - L. 4,9 IN.
Medieval evangeliaries usually had rigid wooden bindings that were frequently decorated in the 13th century with champlevé enamel on copper in several sections; the obverse usually featured a small Christ on the cross in the centre, framed by mouldings that were also enamelled. The cross was enamelled in polychrome and the Christ in gilded bas-relief, sometimes enamelled with perizonium. Most of these pieces have been dismantled over the years and now stand alone, as shown here.
