XIVth (14th) CENTURY PROCESSIONAL CROSS FROM LOMBARDIA, Italy, made on a wooden core
covered with gilded bronze plaques
engraved and in relief.
Circa 1400.
The front is decorated with Christ on the cross,
surmounted by the titulus bearing the inscription
INRI "Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorum",
and the four evangelists with their
symbols: the eagle for John, the lion for Mark
lion for Mark, the angel for Matthew, and the
the bull for Luke.
The reverse is centred on an engraved motif of
God the Father contemplating the dove
of the Holy Spirit, surrounded by foliage,
and portraits of the witnesses to the
Crucifixion, including Mary, John, Mary Magdalene
Madeleine, and a winged figure evoking
the divine presence.
