This is the first edition of the remarkable and extremely rare world chronic, it comprises the history of the world from the Creation all the way to the year of printing in 1521, paying special attention to historical events in France in England. The chronic is arranged in form of a continuous genealogical tree, illustrated with, among others, views of London, Paris, Rome, Trier and Troy as well as with portraits and scenes from the bible.
In medieval times literary, liturgical and scientific works were almost exclusively produced as codices. For administrative and archiving purposes (ownership registers, court files etc.) the vellum scrolls (rotuli, rotulus) were used up into the early 15th century. In Central Europe land ownership was commonly documented in form of rotuli. The German words 'Rodel' or 'Rödel' which are used to describe arable lands, perhaps originate from this usage of the scrolls. The so-called 'Bürgerrolle' (towns scroll, ancient census) was also recorded in form of a vellum scroll. In the Alemannic language the term 'Rodel' is also used as a synonym for that. Chronicles, however, in form of rotuli, are very seldom.
The structure and the leaves with print on only one side, prove that the chronic had originally been planned and outlined as a rotulus, but still, the majority of those few documented copies were bound in book form.
Copies on vellum in form of scrolls are nearly impossible to find. In 1824 Van Praet mentioned four complete (not including this one) and one or two incomplete copies on vellum, today just three copies in form of a scroll can be found in public libraries (Lisboa, London and Paris).
Collation
32 vellum leafs (each 55 x 36.5 cm, final leaf 55 x 16 cm) printed on one side and put together to a scroll with a length of cabout 11 meters. All parts at hand, the work is complete.
Condition
The vellum is in good condition with strong impression. Consistently browned, stronger at the beginning and the end. Somewhat rubbed in places. In good condition, however, the morocco case with traces of use.
