Lot no. 4
Cross from the cover of an evangelary in engraved copper with traces of gilding and champlevé enamel. Limoges. France. 13th century.
22 x 11,5 cm.
Medieval gospels usually had rigid wooden bindings that, in the thirteenth century, were decorated with champlevé enamels on copper in various elements; the front cover often featured Christ on the cross at the center, in gilded low relief, sometimes enameled on the perizonium. Most have been dismantled over time and today are displayed individually, as in this case.
