Lot no. 262
JUG
Green-beige glass, deposits
H. 14.5 cm
Roman art, 2nd-4th century
Provenance
European private collection, acquired on the English art market in the years 1990-2000.
An elegant blown glass jug of flattened globular form with a short neck and wide flared mouth. The piece is distinguished by its striking, dramatic ribbed handle with fine parallel vertical ribs running from the shoulder to the top attachment on the rim, creating a refined decorative effect characteristic of fine Roman glassware. The squat body is adorned with horizontal fillets of applied glass (trail decoration) forming several raised bands that punctuate the body and visually reinforce the structure while making it easier to grip. The mouth has a folded lip forming a wide, flat circular rim, a technical detail that allows precise pouring and gives the opening strength. The glass, a translucent green-beige with amber tones, has developed a magnificent patina of silver and gold iridescence as a result of age-old alteration, with shimmering reflections that enliven the surface and bear witness to the object's age-old authenticity. Traces of ochre mineral concretions dotting the surface attest to its prolonged burial. This type of jug was used to serve liquids at Roman meals: water, wine mixed with water, milk or flavoured drinks. Its squat, stable shape made it ideal for everyday domestic use in the domus (urban houses) or villae (rural estates) of the wealthy classes. In addition to its functional role, the ribbed handle was a decorative element that enhanced the object and demonstrated the technical virtuosity of the glassmaker.
Excellent conservation, with the entire structure preserved, including the ribbed handle intact.
A Roman Ribbed Handle Glass Jug. 2nd-4th century A.D.
Elegant blown glass jug of flattened globular form with short neck and wide flared mouth. The piece is distinguished by its remarkable spectacular ribbed handle displaying fine parallel vertical ribs running from the shoulder to the upper attachment on the rim, creating a refined decorative effect characteristic of quality Roman glassware. The squat body is adorned with applied horizontal glass trails (trail decoration) forming several relief bands that punctuate the body and visually reinforce the structure while facilitating grip. The mouth features a folded rim forming a wide circular flat edge, a technical detail allowing precise pouring and conferring solidity to the opening. The glass, in a translucent green-beige hue with amber nuances, has developed a magnificent silvery and golden iridescent patina resulting from centuries-long alteration, with shimmering reflections that animate the surface and testify to the object's millennial authenticity. Traces of ochre mineral concretions dotting the surface attest to its prolonged burial. This jug typology served for serving liquids during Roman meals: water, wine mixed with water, milk, or flavoured beverages. Its squat and stable form destined it for daily domestic use in domus (urban houses) or villae (rural estates) of wealthy classes. The ribbed handle, beyond its functional role, constituted a decorative element valorising the object and demonstrating the glassmaker's technical virtuosity. Excellent conservation.
