Good condition
In this late composition, characterised by its great chromatic freshness, Cuno Amiet reduces the floral motif to its essentials: a red rose in full bloom in a deep green vase, rendered with broad strokes of colour and simplified planes. The deliberately pared-back composition of the image highlights the full intensity of the interplay between reds, greens and luminous whites, characteristic of the painter’s palette in his mature works.
This small still life reveals the full modernity of the pictorial language developed by Amiet in the post-war period, in which colour now takes precedence over descriptive detail. The contrast between the almost sculptural density of the flower and the lightness of the background lends the work as a whole a particularly decorative quality.
This intimate work perfectly illustrates the Swiss artist’s late synthesis of Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and the modern simplification of form.
