Curtius Grolig was a merchant in Dresden and devoted himself to drawing and painting. He made a study trip in 1834, taking him from Hamburg to the north of Norway. He was in Munich in 1838 and then Algiers before settling in Paris. A painter of flowers, still lifes and seascapes, Grolig is best known for his collaboration with Horace Vernet and his Oriental landscapes. He died in Versailles in 1863.
