In-8, tawny shagreen, triple gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of Cuvier's first book. It is illustrated with fourteen plates outside the text, engraved after the author by Buvry, relating to the anatomy of mammals, birds, insects, molluscs, etc. Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) was one of the founders of modern comparative anatomy. He enunciated the principle of subordination of organs and correlation of forms and proposed a classification of the animal kingdom, based on the study of comparative anatomy, into four phyla: articulated, vertebrates, molluscs and radiaria.
