Nach einer medizinischen Ausbildung wandte sich Edoarda (genannt Dada) der Kunst zu und freundete sich mit Piero Manzoni (1933-1963) an, mit dem sie ab 1957 eine lebenslange Freundschaft verband. Ihr erster bedeutender Werkkomplex sind die sogenannten "Volume", die sie 1958 auf ihrer ersten Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Bossi in Mailand zeigte. Diesem Komplex gehört auch das vorliegende Werk an. 1959, dem Jahr, in dem die Arbeit entstand, trat Dada der Gruppe Azimuth bei, die Piero Manzoni, Agostino Bonalumi (1935-2013) und Enrico Castellani (geb. 1930) gegründet hatten.
