Lot no. 69
Damask silk with a diamond ring, emblem of the Medici family, Italy, first half of the 16th century, Green silk damask decorated with a flowering pomegranate and foliage with a ring motif adorned with a faceted diamond set in an ogival network of garlands of foliage ringed with fleur-de-lys wreaths, 110 x 27 cm. This well-documented diamond-ring damask appeared in the early 16th century and is associated with the Medici family. Similar versions exist, but its decoration and wide distribution in the 16th century suggest that other important families may have used it to decorate church choirs and palaces for weddings. Related work: a similar damask in the same shade is in the Metropolitan Museum Inv. 46.156.116
