The dramatic circumstances of her death at the age of 29 deeply affected Queen Hortense. During a hike together in the Sierroz gorges, Adèle leaned on her parasol as she crossed a narrow wooden footbridge, causing the board to overturn. She was propelled into the water and Hortense tried in vain to rescue her by throwing her shawl over her.
