Louis Bénigne François Bertier de Sauvigny (1737-1789), initially a lawyer at the Parliament of Paris, councillor at the Grand Council and maître des requêtes, became intendant of the Generalitat of Paris in 1744 and First President of the Parliament of Paris from 1771. From 1776 until his death, he drew up a land register for the Generalitat of Paris, listing the city's parishes so that taxes could be harmonised. At the start of the Revolution, he was put in charge of supplying the siege army. He was abducted from Compiègne on 22 July 1789 and brought back to Paris the same day, where he was hanged and dismembered in front of the Hôtel de Ville.
