DANTE (1265-1321). La Divina Commedia...Dedicata alla sagra imperial maestà di Elisabetta Petrowna imperatrice [CON:] Prose, e Rime...tomo quarto, parte prima (di due). Venice: Antonio Zatta, 1757-1758. Genuine copy in contemporary carta rustica of this celebrated and elegant Venetian edition of the Commedia. Present are the first three volumes of the Commedia and the first part of the fourth volume. The second part of the fourth volume, which included the Vita di Dante, the penitential psalms, and De Monarchia, was likely replaced from the outset by Gozzi's work on Dante's censorship, bound in a matching contemporary binding. 4 volumes, Folio, (290 x 220mm). Commedia: engraved frontispiece, title-pages with copper-engraved vignettes, engraved dedication plate, portraits of Elisabetta Petrowna and Dante, one plate with coins, Dante's tomb, and a map of Hell bound at the end of vol. I, and 100 engraved illustrations at the beginning of each canto engraved by Magnini, Rizzi, Crivellari da Fontebasso, Zompini, Schiavonio, and Marcaggi (sporadic light foxing, quire Aaa in vol. III bound before Aa but complete). Volume four, part one: engraved frontispiece and 3 additional plates (the second part is lacking).
