DANTE ALIGHIERI (1265-1321). Opere del diuino poeta Danthe. Venice: Stagnino, 1520. Study copy, once belonging to a murder victim, of this handsome illustrated edition of the Commedia. According to a note of ownership on the verso of the colophon, the volume was donated to Giovan Battista Romagno, vicar general of Feltre, by a man named Giovan Giacomo... who was later killed by an arquebus shot fired by an assassin sent by Count Vincenzo Calini, a member of a powerful Brescian family. 4to (210 x 153mm). 1 full-page woodcut at the opening of the Commedia, 98 woodcut illustrations in the text, decorative woodcut border to first leaf of Inferno, printer's device to colophon (lacking leaves A, A2, and A12 ; i.e. the title-page and two preliminary leaves; ink corrosion to the full-page woocdut; some occasional foxing). Disbound. Provenance: 'This book was given to me, Giovan Battista Romagno.... I was in ... in Bologna by Gio. Giacomo Frandione (?) of Bricciano, who was later killed by an arquebus shot ... by an assassin... and he too was then slain outside by some of P.'s companions. Count Vincenzo Calini was the instigator'; several contemporary marginal notes. (1)
