Lot no. 129
DANTE ALIGHIERI. Comedia con l'espositione di Christophoro Landino. Venice, Jacopo da Borgofranco for Lucantonio Giunta, 1529. In-folio, stiff vellum over boards, title in calligraphy in ink on the spine (modern binding). Superb Venetian edition of the Divine Comedy accompanied by Cristoforo Landino's commentary, first published in 1481.
The title is printed in red and black, with the large red lily mark of the Giunta family, framed by portraits of Latin historians and Italian poets. The verso features a very fine full-page portrait of Dante in profile. The rest of the illustrations include nearly 100 woodcuts in the text, including 3 large ones, one at the beginning of each canto, copied from the iconography of the 1491 edition.
From the library of Paul Schmidt, with bookplate.
