Lot no. 21
DANTE ALIGHIERI. [La Divina Commedia]. Brescia, Bonino de Boninis, 1487. In-folio of [301] ff (out of 310), bradel white half vellum with corners decorated in black ink, smooth spine decorated with a reproduction of the printer's mark and the title calligraphied in black capitals, smooth edges (Modern binding dated 1943). First edition of the Divine Comedy illustrated in all three parts.
The Florentine edition of 1481 included only a few illustrations in the first chants of the Inferno. The present edition is illustrated throughout Hell and Purgatory, with one engraving per song, and includes an engraving at the head of Paradise. The first fully illustrated edition was published in Venice in 1491.
This was the eleventh edition of the Divine Comedy (the first was published in 1472), and the third with the commentary by the Florentine humanist Cristoforo Landino, originally published in the Florentine edition of 1481.
It was also the first to be printed in Brescia. It is the work of the printer Bonino de Boninis, a native of Ragusa (in present-day Croatia), also known as Dobrić Dobričević.
The iconographic cycle includes 68 woodcuts, all but one full-page, and the printer's mark on the colophon. These very curious, naive engravings have been attributed to two separate artists who were also responsible for illustrating Bonino de Boninis's Aesop, published in the same year. They have sometimes been attributed to the artist Giovanni Antonio da Brescia, whose first known works date back to 1490, in Mantua, in the entourage of Mantegna.
Ff. h1/h8 are in state B, with the inscription on the engraving on f. h1 printed on the press and that on f. h8 unframed.
From the library of Jacques Moreau, with his initials calligraphed on the upper corners of the binding, signed and dated on the lower corners F. V. / HP. / 1943.
Missing the 8 introductory ff. (&1-8) and the last blank folio (L6); small lack affecting an engraving (r6), spotting and worm work sometimes affecting the text, first folio doubled (a1), marginal repairs generally sparing the text on about 26 ff.
