Lot no. 15
DANTE. Dante, con l'espositioni di Christoforo Landino, et d'Alessandro Vellutello, sopra la sua Comedia dell' Inferno, del Purgatorio, & del Paradiso. Venice, Giovambattista, Marchio Sessa & fratelli, 1578. In-folio, shagreened calf, smooth threaded spine, spotted edges (Early 19th century binding). Reprint of the first edition published by Francesco Sansovino in 1564, bringing together for the first time the commentaries of Landino and Vellutello. Abundant woodcut illustrations including a portrait of Dante on the title, 96 figures in the text and the printer's mark on the last leaf. These engravings, taken from the edition given by Marcolini in 1544, and in some cases enlarged, are quite curious; they give for the first time a modern and expressive character to the illustration of the Divine Comedy. Hinges worn, epidermis on the covers, small repair to the corner of the title, minor dampstaining, wormhole at the end of the volume.
