Lot no. 409
After models attributed to Tiziano Aspetti (1559-1606) or Nicolò Roccatagliata (circa 1560-1629), Venetian, 17th century Mars and a female allegory Two bronze figures Resting on a later marble base H. (Mars): 50 cm (19 ¾ in.) H. (female allegory) : 47 cm (18 ½ in.) Two bronze figures of Mars and a Female Allegory, after models attributed to Tiziano Aspetti (1559-1606) or Nicolò Roccatagliata (circa 1560-1629), Venetian, 17th century These models are traditionally attributed to a Venetian origin. A very similar pair, whose female figure differs from the present bronze by the inclusion of a sun on her breast and the absence of a book, was sold at Christie's London on 5 July 1988 (lot 85) with a provisional attribution to Nicolò Roccatagliata (circa 1560-1629). More recently, the models have been attributed to Tiziano Aspetti (1559-1606), when a pair of andirons surmounted by almost identical figures, formerly in the Rothschild collection, was sold at Christie's New York on 29 October 2019 (lot 1012). The female figure in the Rothschild bronzes has the same iconography as the 1988 bronze, with the addition of a club in her right hand, leading to her identification as Omphale. Standing on a tortoise in all the versions, the woman could represent the allegory of Virtue, but her iconography varies from one bronze to another, allowing several identifications. From a stylistic point of view, the current models may have been made in Roccatagliata's workshop, as their heavy eyelids and thick curls of hair are characteristic of the sculptor's style. The armour of the male figure can be compared to works by Roccatagliata, particularly his model of Saint George and the Dragon. However, given that the present bronzes show stylistic differences from works by Roccatagliata and Aspetti dating from around 1600, for example with regard to the broader facial features, it is likely that they were cast in one of the artist's workshops. *Information for buyers: Lot from outside the EU: The hammer price is exclusive of VAT.
