Lot no. 62
After Jean GOUJON. The nymphs of the Fountain of the Innocents in Paris. Four large bronze bas-reliefs. Cast in the early 20th century. Height 230 cm - Width : 60 cm Note: These bas-reliefs depict nymphs carrying urns, based on Jean Goujon's sculptures for the Fontaine des Nymphes, built by Pierre Lescot in 1548. It was later renamed Fontaine des Innocents when it was moved to Place des Innocents in the 18th century. Provenance: Domaine du Bois d'Aucourt owned by Gustave Adolphe Clément-Bayard, a French industrialist and manufacturer of bicycles and automobiles, responsible for the DUNLOP tire. At the end of the 19th century, Gustave-Adolphe Clément-Bayard acquired land in the Bois d'Aucourt near Pierrefonds. Influenced by Viollet-le-Duc's work in Pierrefonds, he commissioned architect Pacaud to build a neo-Gothic manor house. In 1911, he commissioned landscape architect Édouard Redon (1862-1942) to design the exterior. This unique place reflects his taste for the Middle Ages and his attachment to the knight Bayard, the finest example of which can be found in the iconography of the Salon Bayard. As owner of the premises, he set about recreating a special atmosphere by purchasing unique objects and furnishings.
