DAUMIER (Honoré). Sketches of expressions. Paris, Aubert & Cie, s.d. [1838-1839]. In-4 oblong, mounted on tabs, plum half-maroquin with corners, smooth spine, untrimmed (Modern binding). A precious and rare collection comprising all 53 lithographs by Honoré Daumier for the Croquis d'expressions series (nos. 1-53), as well as 2 lithographs from the same series by Henri-Daniel Plattel (nos. 54-55). This copy comprises 48 lithographs in coloured and gummed proofs - including 7 with a second state in black (nos. 34, 35, 37, 38, 41, 48, 50) - and 7 lithographs in black only. A total of 62 proofs. All these prints are on white vellum with the letter and number, except for two taken from the journal with the text on the reverse (nos. 39 and 52). The suite of Croquis d'expressions, by Daumier (nos. 1-53) and Plattel (nos. 54-100), appeared in Le Charivari from January 1838 to April 1839. Colour of morocco unevenly faded; some plates yellowed or stained; pen tests on the coloured state of plate no. 38 (unbound). Delteil and Daumier-Register, 466-521.
